Day 120 — Silhouette

A simple silhouette of my friend Ife as she was checking her emails at the kitchen counter. I had the lens fully extended to capture her unknowingly from a distance.

Day 119 — Colima Ghost

The pottery Colima dog first appeared on Day 33. In this photo only his shadow is evident. He is standing inside a glass enclosed case upon a glass shelf.

Day 118 — Kitchen Hardware

I had fun catching all these mid grays in our pots and pans today.

Day 117 — Garlic Bulb

I wanted lots of grays and blacks behind this garlic clove and I placed it on one of our black plywood chairs for this effect. It even offered a little reflection. Garlic is a staple at our place.

Day 116 — Flying Duvet

Sometimes when Mikael makes the bed he throws the duvet over the mezzanine to give it an airing. This is my view from below when that happens. It can be quite startling to see a large swathe of fabric come flying down from above.

Day 115 — Porcelain on Stainless

These cups have appeared on Days 3, 16, 20 and 31 and I just keep coming back to them because of the way they change with each lighting situation and surface upon which they are placed.

Day 114 — Bicycles

After having had my bike stolen from the garage, both our bikes are now kept beside the stairs in the living room. They too get to occasionally bathe in the long afternoon light reflected off the adjacent condos.

Day 113 — Floorscape (Longview)

As I have stated before, I am mesmerized by the changing shadows across our floor. After living in this space for 10 years, I was astounded this morning to discover a new view that I had not yet documented.

Day 112 — Earth Day

It was the return twist of the leaf that I feel gave this image a humorous attitude.

Day 111 — 3 Splashes

Upon first look, one would think that I had a great strobe set-up and incredible luck to get three identical splashes. The truth is that I found these three splash-shaped dishes at SFMOMA. They only measure about two inches across. To complete the illusion I sat them in a shallow baking tray filled with a thin layer of milk.

Day 110 — Plays of Light Upon the Back Door

The back door, which is in front of my work station. I was up very early in the morning.

Day 109 — Lemon Slice

I noticed the afternoon sun was shining brightly against the back door and I opened it just a sliver to cast this narrow beam of light across a bowl of lemons.

Day 108 — Gone with the Wind

I held this long-gone tulip up to the sky on the balcony for this shot. It inspired me to take a whole series.

Nevertheless, they do possess a unique lace-like quality during the period of their demise.

These chunky, cheerful daffodils are the only things painted with sunlight at this early hour of the morning.

Day 104 — Up Close and Personal

The sun was shining directly into the face of this phalaenopsis flower when I took this close-up from behind (Check out the shutter speed). To take this shot I used an inexpensive Nikon #2 close-up lens on my 50mm prime lens.

Although mostly concerned with the shadow of the tulips, I also felt compelled to crop the sideboard to be a perfect cube.

I was careful in the placement of the orchid that all the petals got kissed by the rising sun.

The apartment only gets direct light from the east, however this scene is lit by the setting sun reflected from the apartments opposite.

Day 93 — Balcony Shadows

Day 87 — Wallscape, Spring

This is the what I see when I look up from my work station and is the background image for this blog page. It first appeared on Day 28, however, now that the sun's arc has changed with the onset of spring, the resulting shadows have become more dramatic.

Day 86 — Tulip in the Rain

The potted tulips on the balcony were treated to a light rain. This photo was taken a few hours after the rain and the droplets had graduated in size as they evaporated off.

Day 85 — Noir

I took this shot from my desk. The inexpensive bowl from Pier 1 looks more majestic with all the film noir lighting effects swirling about.

Day 84 — iDada

Very early in the morning, just minutes after sunrise, my iMac is perfectly reflected against the wall. Beside it sits my set of auction catalogs for the estate of Andre Breton. I am a huge fan of Dada and even maintain a website for "Exquisite Corpse".

Day 80 — What Am I Looking At?

I'm not sure what I am photographing here — the orchids or the lighting. The partially closed blind creates laser like images in the early morning.

Can one be too minimalist? The shadows on the floor just grab me every time. I'd love to do a show of just the 'floorscapes.'

Day 77 — White and Black

I know you've been missing the tulips — it is spring after all. I think this image works because it is divided down the middle (black and white) with the shadows in the white square and sunlit flowers in the black square.

Day 76 — Flying High

I startled myself with this shot off the balcony. It looks like I am flying over the clouds rather than only standing on the fourth floor balcony. I like the way the 'rule of thirds' plays out with the deep gray at the top, mid gray sky center and clouds on the bottom.

Day 75 — Cohncave

It's been a while since I photographed the Alessi "Cohncave" bowl. The actual bowl is the curve on top and its resulting shadow is the shape below.

Day 74 — Into the Light

I broke all the rules with this shot. I shot into the light which made the flowers delicately translucent.

Last Thursday I posted "Protrusion" from a different angle. I like this one in the way it flattens the plane and is a little more confusing to the eye.

We have a dark chocolate wall in the kitchen which I like to use for portraits. Portrait photography is the rare occasion I pull out the flash. This time it is bounced off a low white ceiling.
